This country classic recipe is often served as a traditional New Year\u2019s Day dinner and is said to bring luck to the home that serves it.\u00a0<strong>It\u2019s a fabulous\u00a0<\/strong><strong>family dinner idea<\/strong><strong>, when the weather gets cold.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Growing up my mom made cabbage rolls every year for New Year\u2019s Day.\u00a0Now that I think about it, everyone in our hometown made some version of cabbage rolls on New Year\u2019s. It\u2019s a Southern West Virginia tradition, to be sure. It\u2019s truly hard to know where this dish originated.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe it\u2019s because cabbage is a vegetable that\u2019s easy to grow in many climates. Enjoy!!!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"zlrecipe-ingredients\" class=\"h-4 strong\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Ingredients<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul id=\"zlrecipe-ingredients-list\">\n<li class=\"ingredient\">1 head of cabbage<\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\">1 lb. ground beef<\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\">1 small onion, chopped<\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\">2 eggs<\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\">1\/2 cup rice<\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\">1\/2 cup oats<\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\">1\/4 cup bread crumbs<\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\">1 tsp. salt.<\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\">1\/2 tsp. pepper<\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\">1 tsp. oregano<\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\">1\/2 tsp. thyme<\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\">2 bottles of tomato juice<\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\">toothpicks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"zlrecipe-instructions\" class=\"h-4 strong\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Instructions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"instruction\">In a large pot add full head of cabbage cover with salted water, bring to boil. Let cook until cabbage becomes tender. Drain, cool down with cold water, drain. Gently peel about 12 \u201316 leaves from the head.<\/p>\n<p class=\"instruction\">While cabbage is tenderizing, mix together, the meat, eggs, rice, oats, bread crumbs, and spices. Roll into 1 inch balls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"instruction\">Once the cabbage is ready, place 1 ball in each leaf nearest the spine of the leaf, fold sides over the center, then roll forward. Use a toothpick to hold the rolled leaf together, it\u2019s best if you can pierce the spine of the leaf.<\/p>\n<p class=\"instruction\">Layer rolls in large pot, cover with tomato juice, bring to a boil then reduce heat to simmer for about 1 hour<\/p>\n<p id=\"zlrecipe-notes\" class=\"h-4 strong\">Notes<\/p>\n<div id=\"zlrecipe-notes-list\">\n<p class=\"notes\">Serve with a side of homemade bread or homemade cornbread.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you are looking for a\u00a0comforting winter dinner idea\u00a0then this is the recipe for you.
